The first generation Mondeo with the Mk I index debuted in the fall of 1992, replacing the rear-wheel drive Ford Sierra in the company's lineup. In March 1993, the car went on sale, and in 1996 it underwent a planned update, changing the designation to Mk 2.

It should be noted that in the North American market "Mondeo" was known under the names of Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique.

The "first" Ford Mondeo is a midsize car that came in three body styles: sedan, five-door hatchback and station wagon. Depending on the design of the body, the length of the car is from 4481 to 4630 mm, width - from 1740 to 1750 mm, height - from 1369 to 1428 mm. The wheelbase is allocated from 2700 to 2704 mm, but the ground clearance is unchanged in all cases - 120 mm.

The 1st generation Mondeo relied on a wide range of engines. The gasoline section is formed by four-cylinder "aspirated" with a volume of 1.6 to 2.0 liters, with a potential of 88 to 136 horsepower and from 135 to 180 Nm of torque.
There was also a V-shaped "six" of 2.5 liters, which generates 170 "horses" and 220 Nm.
The turbo diesel version with a volume of 1.8 liters develops 88 forces and 178 Nm of thrust.
The motors were combined with a five-speed “mechanics” or a 4-band “automatic”; for the 136-horsepower version, the all-wheel drive technology was an option.

At the heart of the "first" Ford Mondeo is the CDW27 platform with MacPherson struts on the front axle and a "multi-link" on the rear axle. Disc brakes are installed on the front of the car, and drum ones on the rear. The most powerful modification uses full disc brakes.

The advantages of the "Mondeo" Mk I include a well-organized interior, an attractive appearance for a car of this year, efficient engines, a comfortable suspension, overall structural reliability, an effective climate system and stable behavior on the road.

There are also negative aspects, including high fuel consumption, small clearance under the bottom, mediocre sound insulation, high cost of some spare parts, squeaky plastic in the cabin and poor headlights.
